What do you mean by “galvanisation” ?

Galvanisation is a process by which you cover a plastic or metallic manufactured item with a thin metal layer to protect against corrosion and/or ageing. This process is regularly used in modern furniture and for fittings used in clothing stores.

Why is it appropriate to paint a substrate galvanically treated ?

Galvanised manufactured items are coated with clearcoats to give gloss or matt aesthetic protective effects from oxidation, corrosion or mechanical stress (shocks and scratches) as well as to reduce the thickness of the metal used for the galvanised substrate, ensuring however protection by applying a suitable thickness of paint.

Indeed, items intended for sectors requiring high aesthetical characteristics are often subject to strongly oxidizing and corrosive actions. This is the case, for instance, of clothing accessories, leather goods and footwear, which are often quickly deteriorated by aggressive substances partially contained in leather and textiles with which they come into contact, or objects such as  knobs and handles or taps, repeatedly handled and therefore subject to frequent manipulation.

What is formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a chemical substance used to form resins, in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry and belongs to volatile organic compounds. In the ’80s it was widely used, but today current regulations impose an upper limit inside the product equal to 0.1%.

Galvanising process

Galvanisation is a process by which you cover a plastic or metallic manufactured item with a thin metal layer to protect against corrosion. This process is differently named according to the metal used for the protective film. The operation of Industrial Galvanisation can be performed in 2 different modes:

  •  Hot galvanisation: the manufactured item is thoroughly dipped into a galvanic bath (molten metal) and is coated by a protective film
  •  Cold galvanisation: the manufactured item is dipped into an electrolytic solution to allow protection adhere to the item through electrolysis, by which ion of the protective material migrate to the metal to be treated, in a uniform and precise way.

Types of Galvanisation

This process is differently named according to the metal used for the protective film.

  • Nickel plating gives the coated object a more “vintage” effect compared to chrome-plating and a yellowish colour.                                                         
  • Gold plating gives the object the beauty that can be only given by a precious metal such as gold, whilst maintaining the economy of the item, as only the external surface is made of gold. Gold plating is mainly used in the clothing, precious items and glasses sector and on small objects requiring valuable finishes.
  • Copper plating is mainly used in the electric-electronic sector to coat conductors with minor conductive properties (such as aluminium cables):  copper as gold, has a greater conductive power compared to other metals.
  • Bronze plating consists in coating the manufactured item with a thin bronze layer. It is much used in the furniture and door and window frames sectors, as it matches the warm colours of wooden doors: knobs, handles, hinge, peepholes and latches are carried out with this process.
  • Brass plating is used for home decorations, clothing, hinges, handles, chandeliers, beds and toys.
  • Burnishing can be carried out with different dark nuances: you can obtain gloss blacks, graphite black, steel grey, antique bronze.
